Galectin-3 (GAL-3) is a lectin with a carbohydrate-binding domain present on several myeloid-immune cells like macrophages. It is ubiquitously expressed in the heart, kidney, blood vessels, and macrophages and it plays a role in tissue fibrosis, immunity, and the inflammatory response. Elevated serum galectin-3 levels have been detected in almost all types of cardiovascular disease and its prognostic value for different clinical outcomes has been extensively investigated in patients. Specifically, Galectin-3 is used as a biomarker for monitoring chronic heart failure. Diagnostic assays for Galectin-3 rely on the two-site sandwich ELISA or CLIA assay principle.
