C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute-phase inflammation protein released by the liver leading to activation of the complement cascade and production of cytokines such as interleukin 6 (IL-6). It is elevated in autoimmune disorders, organ rejection, infection, and thrombosis. CRP is used as a marker of inflammation and high sensitivity CRP (hS-CRP) assays are able to detect low levels of CRP which can be seen in persistent levels of inflammation that can increase an individual’s risk of cardiovascular disease. Quantitative hs-CRP assays are based on the two-site sandwich ELISA or CLIA assay principles.
