Histone

Histones are proteins that are a part of chromatin and aid in the coiling of DNA. Certain autoimmune conditions cause the development of histone autoantibodies, which are a type of antinuclear antibodies (ANA). Antibodies to histones are usually found in people with drug-induced lupus, but they can also be found in people with systemic lupus. Detection of anti-histone antibodies is essential for diagnosing and caring for patients at risk of drug-induced lupus or in managing ongoing autoimmune conditions.
