Strep A Testing

A precise diagnostic test for detection of Group A Streptococcus (GAS) from throat swab specimens.

Catalog Number: 410400

Why Revogene® Strep A?

The Revogene Strep A assay is for the direct detection of Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A β-hemolytic Streptococcus; GAS) from throat swab specimens obtained from patients with signs and symptoms of pharyngitis. The signs and symptoms of GAS pharyngitis overlap extensively with other infectious causes, making it difficult to diagnose based solely on clinical findings. However, an accurate diagnosis is necessary to promptly and adequately treat the disease with antibiotics and avoid possible serious complications such as rheumatic fever. This test can provide final results in as early as 42 minutes for positive specimens.*

*E-PRO: Early Positive Result Outcome. Positive results in ~42 minutes for highly positive specimens and negative results in ~70 minutes.)

Test Procedure

one x

  • Break the throat swab into the Sample Buffer Tube (SBT)
  • Vortex the SBT at high speed for 15 seconds.
  • Unseal the pouch containing the Revogene® Strep A PIE.

two x

  • Using the Disposable Transfer Tool (DTT), aspirate the Sample Buffer (SB) by squeezing the entire bulb until the liquid level is anywhere between the two lines on the DTT.
  • Discharge the specimen completely into the Sample Loading Chamber of the PIE.
  • Close the cap of the Sample Loading Chamber tightly

three x

  • Start the test run by navigating to the menu. Select Revogene® Strep A. Follow the onscreen instructions to load the patient test PIE.
  • Load the remaining patient tests. If less than eight (8) PIEs are being tested, load MOCK PIES in the carousel in the remaining positions.
  • Scan the retention ring and place it on the carousel.

four x

  • Close the instrument lid with both hands and ensure the lid lock engages.
  • Select to initiate the test and walk away.
  • The lid opens when the run is complete.
  • Remove all PIEs including MOCK PIES after the run. Tap the icon to see test results.
  • Note: The E-PRO feature may display positive results as early as 42 minutes.

“Revogene Strep A demonstrated good performance during our evaluation and is a promising alternative to replace throat culture and RADT for Streptococcal pathogens detection in a patient presenting with pharyngitis symptoms.

Improved detection and rapid results have the potential to improve antibiotic utilization in the emergency department.”
