Speaker:

Rosa Maria Porreca, PhD, Team Leader, R&D

Summary/Abstract:

Isothermal nucleic acid amplification technologies such as LAMP (loop-mediated isothermal amplification) and NASBA (nucleic acid sequence-based amplification) are enabling rapid, decentralized molecular diagnostics for point-of-care and near-patient testing. Unlike conventional PCR, these methods operate at constant temperatures, reducing instrumentation complexity and enabling faster, portable testing solutions. Their compatibility with lyophilization supports room-temperature stability and simplified distribution logistics, while their tolerance to sample-derived inhibitors minimizes sample preparation requirements. Together, these features make isothermal amplification technologies highly suitable for decentralized and resource-limited settings. By delivering rapid and accurate results at the point of care, these platforms can accelerate clinical decision-making, improve patient outcomes, and expand access to high-quality molecular diagnostics across diverse healthcare environments.

Speaker Bio:

Rosa is an R&D Team Leader at Meridian Life Science. She earned her PhD in Genetics and Life Science in 2014 from the Institute Curie in Paris, where she investigated telomere replication in human cancer cells. She continued her research on telomere replication and recombination as a postdoctoral researcher at Imperial College London, further developing her expertise in molecular biology.

After joining Meridian as a Senior Scientist, she worked on development and optimization of molecular diagnostic assays. She now plays a key role as a team leader in developing innovative molecular diagnostic products for the global diagnostic industry.
