Aspergillus

Aspergillus is a genus name that represents over 185 fungal species, 20 of which cause aspergillosis, or fungal infection, in humans. Aspergillosis symptoms vary with the type of aspergillus infection but all include airway problems that range from mild allergies to severe lung infections. The most serious form of aspergillosis is invasive aspergillosis when the infection spreads from the lungs to the brain, heart, kidneys, or skin and typically this only occurs in individuals with weakened immune systems. The contamination of food and feed by Aspergillus has become a global issue with a significant worldwide economic impact. Diagnosis is by ELISA, and possible chest x-ray to determine if there is fluid or abnormalities in the lungs.
