Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) is the principal inhibitor of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), both of which are key activators of fibrinolysis. Elevated levels of PAI-1 have been associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction due to their role in inhibiting fibrinolysis and promoting thrombosis.
