Cotinine
Cotinine is an alkaloid found in tobacco and it is the predominant metabolite of nicotine. Its main use is as a biomarker for exposure to tobacco smoke. The half-life of cotinine is much longer than nicotine and it can be detected in urine, blood and saliva 7 - 40 hours after exposure to tobacco smoke. Detection is usually by competitive-based ELISAs using urine or saliva samples.
