Shigella
Shigellosis is a very contagious diarrheal disease caused by infection with one of four species of Shigella bacteria (S. dysenteriae, S. flexneri, S. boydii or S. sonnei). Symptoms include an acute onset of diarrhea, fever, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. The infectious dose is very low (as few as 10 organisms) and the bacteria are spread by the fecal-oral route. Diagnosis relies on detection of the bacteria by ELISA, culture, or PCR in stool samples.
