Gastrointestinal Pathogens

A gastrointestinal infection (gastroenteritis) is an infection caused by a virus, bacteria, or parasite that causes inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract (GI) and has the characteristic symptoms of excessive, watery diarrhea and stomach pain. Diagnosis of the responsible intestinal pathogen requires the detection of the organism in the feces, duodenal fluid, or small intestine using biopsy specimens.
